Using Proficiency Scales

Deeper Learning Pathway: Curriculum & Instruction

Session 1: Clarity in the Classroom: Personalizing Student Learning Through Proficiency Scales

  • Intended Audience: Leaders of SRSN Districts and State and Regional Organizations, Principals, Instructional Coaches, Teachers

  • Description: One cannot know they’ve reached their goal if they don’t know where they’re going. A person must be clear on the intended outcomes to create their learning path. In this session, Lindsey Troutman explains how Dr. Robert Marzano’s proficiency scale structure serves as the road map for learning progression through which students drive to the outcomes with clear feedback from their teacher, and their own reflection and self-assessment, on how to improve their thinking. Proficiency scales are in the center of a mastery-based classroom. While they are certainly a tool prominently used by classroom teachers, the full power of scales is unleashed when students understand and use proficiency scales on a frequent basis in a variety of ways. Participants are presented with a plethora of authentic classroom examples to take back to their own learning environment!

Participants will be provided the tools to:

    • Understand how transparency of learning objectives, through use of Proficiency Scales, can be used to generate learning opportunities to build agency.

    • Recognize strategies for helping students understand and navigate the learning expectations of a scale (such Personal Tracking Matrices, Wall Charts, Competent Classmates).

    • Use a process of multiple assessments administered over time on the same topic to determine a student’s score at any point in time.

Session 2: Effective Instructional Planning Based on Proficiency Scales

  • Intended Audience: Leaders of SRSN Districts and State and Regional Organizations, Principals, Instructional Coaches, Teachers

  • Description: Effective instructional planning involves the development of instructional units/units of instruction. In this session, Lindsey Troutman provides an overview of how to develop units of instruction using three phases that ensure teachers provide high-quality opportunities to learn academic content and use proficiency scales as the “hub.” Participants leave this session with examples, templates, and processes for taking this important work back to their schools and districts.

    Participants will:

    • Understand how to apply the three phases of effective instructional planning utilizing Proficiency Scales.

    • Learn how to successfully develop cohesive instructional units based on scales.

    • Leave with examples, templates, and processes for taking this work back to their schools and districts.

Session 3: High-Quality Assessment Opportunities Based on Proficiency Scales

  • Intended Audience: Leaders of SRSN Districts and State and Regional Organizations, Principals, Instructional Coaches, Teachers

  • Description: Assessment is an essential component of a mastery-based classroom. Each individual item or task on an assessment represents a piece that makes up the entire assessment. It is paramount that each item is high quality. Additionally, there are less common (powerful) ways to determine the degree to which a student has learned the critical content. In this informative session, Lindsey Troutman will provide insight into ensuring their assessment practices are high quality and their students are learning with accuracy.

    Participants learn:

    • Utilizing scales to align assessment opportunities

    • Attributes of commonly used assessment item types

    • Innovative ways to gather information about student learning
