Session 1: The What, Why, and How of Proficiency Scales

  • Intended Audience: Leaders of SRSN Districts and State and Regional Organizations, Principals, Instructional Coaches, Teachers

  • Description: A proficiency scale is a tool that illustrates related learning goals and scores to determine a student’s level of performance on measurement topics. In this interactive session there will be an overview of high-quality proficiency scales and their primary uses in the classroom. Participants gain an enhanced understanding of the power of using scales.

    Participants learn:

    • What proficiency scales are and why they are important

    • Understand the anatomy of a Proficiency Scale

    • Identify the difference between a rubric and a scale

    • Primary uses of proficiency scales in the classroom

Session 2: Proficiency Scales in the Classroom

  • Intended Audience: Leaders of SRSN Districts and State and Regional Organizations, Principals, Instructional Coaches, Teachers

  • Description: Deepen an understanding of the anatomy of a scale (how and why they are created) and clear a path for utilizing high-quality proficiency scales. Through this practical training, you will review and gain access to a comprehensive toolkit of strategies, methods, and proficiency scale examples for a variety of content areas and grade levels. You’ll also explore how scales support all students including accommodations and modifications to support students with disabilities, English learners, and gifted and talented students.

    Participants will:

    • Understand how to create and use proficiency scales to clearly frame classroom instruction and assessments for academic success.

    • Recognize the various ways teachers, students, and parents can use proficiency scales to achieve learning goals.

    • Access rubrics (understand the difference between a rubric and a scale), criteria checklists, example goals, and pacing guides that you can use in concert with proficiency scales to provide valuable, meaningful feedback to students.

Session 3: Using Proficiency Scales Effectively

  • Intended Audience: Leaders of SRSN Districts and State and Regional Organizations, Principals, Instructional Coaches, Teachers

  • Description: A proficiency scale is a tool that illustrates related learning goals and scores to determine a student’s level of performance on measurement topics. In this interactive session, Lindsey Troutman provides an overview of how teachers and students can effectively use scales for various purposes. Participants gain an enhanced understanding of the power of using scales.

    Participants learn:

    • Various strategies for teacher use of proficiency scales in the classroom

    • Ways to encourage student use of proficiency scales
