This hands-on, in-person session is crafted for individuals who are new to the dynamic realm of learner-centered practices and those seeking a refreshing dive into these transformative concepts. Over the course of an engaging six hour session, participants will:

  • Connect directly with peers

  • Delve into crucial topics specific to learner-centered practice

  • Explore the characteristics of POWERful learners: Purpose, Ownership, Wonder, Efficacy, and Responsibility

Kate Sommerville brings two decades of experience to her role as a Professional Development Specialist with i4PL (Institute for Personalized Learning), an education innovation lab dedicated to the transformation of public education. i4PL serves a growing number of member school districts engaged in learner-centered practice.

Using her creativity and enthusiasm, Kate supports educators, school and district leaders as they shift their instructional practices and learning environments and rethink what school could be. She has presented at local, state, and national conferences, and has a true passion for keeping the student at the center of learning through the increasing the learner’s voice, curiosity-driven experiences and nurturing agency. She looks forward to using her own personal experiences to network and coach educators, districts, and learners on their own journey towards learner-centered practice.

Zak Lenski

Zak Lenski has spent the past ten years working with Wisconsin's K-12 students in the Green Bay and Waukesha area. For the last six years Zak worked with KM Global, a learner centered charter environment in the Kettle Moraine School District. There he developed student-centered practices and curriculum focused on leadership skills, innovative thinking, and making an impact. In his role as a Professional Development Specialist, Zak hopes to share strategies and practices that will help districts and staff nurture student agency, voice and choice, and interpersonal skill development. As someone who has navigated the shift to learner-centered practices, Zak knows that this shift takes time, patience, and a village. He is excited to work alongside districts and their staff as they navigate their journey towards a more learner-centric ecosystem.
