Monthly Learning: The Role and Purpose of Assessment

  • Intended Audience: Leaders of SRSN Districts and State and Regional Organizations, Principals, Instructional Coaches, Teachers

  • Description: Assessment is a tool. Some might argue that it is the most important tool in a competency-based learning environment. In this session, you will examine the role of assessment as it pertains to both teaching and learning, as well as monitoring the effectiveness of instruction.

Session 1: Assessing Throughout the Learning Experience

  • Intended Audience: Leaders of SRSN Districts and State and Regional Organizations, Principals, Instructional Coaches, Teachers

  • Description: Assessment for learning is an ongoing process. In this session, you will analyze the role of assessment throughout an instructional cycle. You will review and plan what to assess, when to assess it, and how to use “mounting evidence” to estimate a summative score based on a series of formative scores.

Session 2: Collecting, Tracking and Using Assessment Evidence

  • Intended Audience: Leaders of SRSN Districts and State and Regional Organizations, Principals, Instructional Coaches, Teachers

  • Description: Assessment should be both meaningful and empowering for students and teachers. In this interactive session, you will review and develop a system for collecting and using assessment data to personalize instruction. Samples and strategies will provide you with tools for students to take higher levels of ownership of their own learning.

Doug Rigby started his career in education 29 years ago as a social studies teacher and coach. After earning his M. Ed. in administration, he created and led a new accredited alternative school within Uinta County School District #1 in Evanston, Wyoming.

Doug’s current role is as an assistant superintendent in that same district. In this capacity, he is responsible for curriculum, instruction, assessment, principal and teacher professional development, and human resources for the district’s secondary schools.

Doug is passionate about creating a learning environment where all students learn at high levels. All of the schools in Doug’s district are part of the High Reliability Schools Network, and each has some level of Model PLC recognition.
